Pups and Muts Dog Rescue is dedicated to helping secure futures for unwanted and homeless dogs within the U.K.

Sadly every year thousands of dogs within the U.K find themselves without a home and loving family. Often their owners have had a change in circumstance and are no longer able to look after their pet. Non neutered dogs result in litters of unwanted puppies that need new homes.

Dogs, who through no fault of their own, find themselves in stray kennels - "the local pound" . Either abandoned, escaped or long term strays, these dogs have seven or eight days in which to be claimed before their “safe” time runs out.*

Pups and Muts Dog Rescue predominantly take in homeless dogs from the Yorkshire area. We aim to help secure rescue places throughout the country within reputable rescues, as well as within our own organisation. Where the dogs receive shelter, food, vetenary care and most importantly some TLC. Once assessed they are re-homed within a loving and responsible pet home.

Prior to re-homing, dogs within our care are placed into foster homes ,after an initial assessment. Our dogs are child, cat & dog tested. The use of foster homes as a test environment, rather than kennels, gives us a much more reliable idea of what the dog will be like once it has gone to it’s new home. And also helps us assess the needs and requirements of the dog.

Pups and Muts Dog Rescue is a non-profit making organisation, run by a group of volunteers. We rely entirely on donations and receive no government funding.

*A recent survey carried out on behalf of Dogs Trust reported that 101,586 stray dogs were found and collected by local authorities    in the UK last year, and 7,743 dogs were destroyed for want of a home, in some cases a dog may have suffered injury or ill health. These dogs have either been dumped or have strayed and although every effort is made to locate the owners of lost dogs, no tag or chip means this can sometimes be impossible.

Over 6,000 of these dogs were collected by Yorkshire local authorities in the last year. This is a 17 per cent increase on last years results, an additional 900 dogs. Shockingly it was discovered that the number of dogs put to sleep unnecessarily has grown from 200 to 400 dogs over the course of the year, which is a worrying increase of 106 per cent. **

**All figures are estimates based on an assumption that responding authorities are representative of authorities as a whole. Results relate to the period 31st March 2005 to 1st April 2006. The 2006 survey was produced by GfK NOP who mailed questionnaires to all 432 local authorities in the UK, with a response rate of 64%. Results are weighted to represent the 432 authorities.
